On Sunday, February 9th, Sing Sistah Sing!© Tales of Transatlantic Freedom with special guest artist Newman Taylor Baker aka WashboardXT will join the Black History Month church service, offering a moving celebration of faith, freedom, and resilience. Through music and storytelling, the performance will honour the spiritual traditions that have connected and uplifted communities across generations. A sensational cabaret evening of drag, opera and music celebrating queer and Black experiences from two award-winning performers: Rhys Hollis (Artist, London); also known as Rhys’s Pieces – rapping drag extraordinaire and one-person cabaret troupe – and Andrea Baker (Mezzo-soprano, Scotland and Germany) who, in addition to her work on the opera stage, is the creator and producer of the award-winning one-woman show Sing Sistah Sing!

Sing Sistah Sing! Tales of Transatlantic Freedom is a work conceived, written and performed by internationally celebrated Mezzo Soprano Andrea Baker in collaboration with renowned composer Howard Moody.
The show celebrates African diasporic narratives from our living musical cultures of folk, blues, jazz, psalm singing and opera, as well as the music of Robert Burns. Andrea performs an incredible range of rare and beautiful songs from across centuries and oceans, connecting and exploring awe-inspiring musical traditions, story and song.

Andrea will lead the group in vocal warmups and the performance of a Negro Spiritual that we you’ll learn together in the workshop. This workshop is part of OMOS, an exhibition at Dunoon Burgh Hall (25 March to 25 April 2022) that pays homage to Scotland’s untold Black history, and celebrates Black performance and excellence in Scotland.
